South Canterbury YMCA is an innovative YMCA operating in the Timaru and Ashburton regions.
Predominantly the activities for South Canterbury are education and enterprise based. We have a dedicated focus on the youth in the communities we operate in and are committed to delivering programmes to all people most in need of assistance.
The YMCA in South Canterbury is a team focused “Y” which prides itself on delivery of high quality programmes and achieves excellence in the chosen fields. We have an enthusiastic staff of 18.
The current activities of YMCA South Canterbury are as follows:
Timaru:
- Skills 4 Life: job search, life skills, motivation, recreation
- WISE (Work & Industry Skills to Employment): workbased training
- Adventure Conservation: recreation, motivation, outdoor challenge
- Heavy Trade: National Certificate, Class 2 Licence and Endorsements
- Introduction to Business Ownership Skills & Strategies (IBOSS): self employment programme
- Driving instruction: available to eligible Work & Income clients
Ashburton:
- Vision Youth: job search, life skills, recreation
- Pathways: job search, life skills, National Certificate in Heavy Trade
- MAPS: young mums assistance, childcare units
The programmes are NZQA accredited and able to deliver units that are transferable to many National Certificates.
Business Administration:
- IBOSS (Introduction to Business Ownership, Skills and Strategies): a self Employment Programme run in conjunction with Aoraki Polytechnic
All of the above programmes offer FREE training and all deliver National Certificates and units of learning to enhance student's ability to get employment. All training is delivered in a safe and supportive environment.
