Mahe Drysdale, Tauranga Patron

The YMCA Tauranga is excited to announce that Olympic Medalist and World Champion, Mahe Drysdale will be its Patron.
Athletes don’t win back to back to back World Championship titles without having something special. His epic battle with Olympic Champion Rob Waddell together with his single scull race in Beijing won him the hearts of many New Zealander’s for his courage and humility. Mahe clearly displays the genuine traits of working hard to be the best and dealing honestly with what is dealt to you.

YMCA Tauranga’s CEO, Amy Thaler explains “As a former University rower, I watched Mahe’s performance in Beijing with great heartache and respect. I was simply overwhelmed with the class, sportsmanship and incredible grace he demonstrated during the Games. He made no excuses, he just simply said he did the best he could do on the day and it wasn’t good enough. And after all of that he showed such sincere happiness for the twins.”

Thaler continues “I can’t think of a better person to uphold our mission nor one that better reflects the embodiment of our core values. He is the perfect person to be our Patron.”

“Given my schedule I am forced to be quite selective about my commitments but when the Y approached me about this opportunity, the relationship made perfect sense. The YMCA Tauranga does great work and is embarking on a campaign to raise its profile so that it can make an even greater impact for the local community. How could I not get behind that?” states Drysdale.
